A simple pheasant tail is an essential pattern for a number of insects. This variation ditches the more common obnoxious triggers and relies on the natural movement and bugginess of a partridge soft hackle.
Tied on Fulling Mill barbless jig hooks with tungsten beads.
The soft hackle pheasant tail from Small Batch Bugs is absolutely irresistible to fish. This has become a go-to nymph pattern for double nymph rigs, and it’s proven to be a real slump-buster when trout are being finicky about my current selection. I’ll swap out flies and present this pattern and I’m rarely disappointed.
Whether I’m fishing freestone streams or tailwaters, targeting natives or other wild trout, I always make sure to have several of these in my fly box. The jig hook and tungsten bead combination is perfect, and I’ll fish these flies until I lose them to snags or breaks.
What really impresses me is the durability - these flies don’t fall apart after catching multiple toothy fish. The quality control is evident in every tie. Small Batch Bugs really delivers on both pattern effectiveness and construction quality. Highly recommended!
