This ultra simple pattern brings the most basic qualities of various small aquatic insects to a trout in a subtle way that can be suggestive of many different insects. Slim body, contrasting ribbing(coated in resin to keep wraps from pulling apart), sparse thorax, and a light tail come together in a way that is, in most situations ‘midge-ey’ enough and ‘mayfly-ish’ enough to capitalize on most small bug bites.
Ppersonally speaking, this is my absolute go-to midge/ small nymph pattern, especially on my local tailwater. Occasionally fished as a single nymph when conditions warrant going extremely light, this fly is one of my most common droppers when I fish multi fly(tight line and suspension) rigs.
